Second Stage Theater provides opportunities for young people to attend and work in professional theater through our Education and Community Outreach programs.
Our free Student Matinees bring over 1,000 junior high and high school students to our mainstage productions each year. Teachers are provided a study guide in advance of the performance to assist in preparing their classroom for their visit. Following the performance, a member of the artistic staff moderates a discussion with the cast and creative team on stage.
Created with the intent to foster the next generation of savvy theatergoers, the Second Generation program is subsidized by the generous contributions from 2ST donors. Recognizing a dire need for outreach throughout the CUNY school system, we have forged strong relationships with many of the community colleges city wide. For a vast majority of these students, a trip to Second Stage is their first to see professional theater. What makes the program especially unique is the student’s opportunity to make repeat visits throughout the year, thus giving them the perspective of an active, repeat theatergoer. Before one selected performance we host a pre-show reception – allowing them to mingle with students from other schools and 2ST donors and subscribers – and a post-show Q&A with the show’s cast and creative team.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP FORUM
During the summer months, our Student Leadership Forum provides high school, college and graduate students with the opportunity to work directly with our staff and gain practical experience in all aspects of theater production and administration.
